Admiral Nurses
Admiral Nurses are specialist dementia nurses, working within the NHS and supported by the charity for dementia. Admiral Nurses provide practical and emotional support throughout the dementia journey, from the point of diagnosis to the period of bereavement and beyond. . Part of this role
is to help carers understand how important it is to be
aware of their own needs.
In a 2008 survey, Admiral Nurses said Crossroads Care was
the easiest service to introduce to families and is the reason for
recent initiatives to build partnerships between Crossroads Care and Admiral Nurses. The National Dementia Strategy, published in February 2009, emphasises
the value of ‘peer support’ as a source of friendship and a
context for developing coping strategies.
Crossroads Care collaborated with Admiral Nurses in a new
‘Homeshare’ initiative in Barking and Dagenham, launched
in Summer 2008. Under the Homeshare concept, a carer
support worker acts as a host for a group of people with
dementia who spend several hours together at the support
worker’s home.
In the early days of the Crossroads Care Barking & Dagenham Homeshare, Admiral Nurse Danny Wong worked alongside the newly recruited Homeshare hosts, giving training and support to prepare them for their role. Danny also worked with Doreen Stevens, (Crossroads Care Barking & Dagenham Director) and Maria Brown (Homeshare co-ordinator) to identify people who might benefit from the new service.
The next collaborative goal for the Barking & Dagenham Admiral Nursing Serviceand
Crossroads Care Barking & Dagenham is to fund a project
to speed up discharge of local people with dementia from
general hospitals following periods of acute care.
Crossroads Care is popular among carers of people with dementia in that it is introduced sensitively and flexibly, with the aim of providing an enjoyable experience for the person being cared for, who may be hesitant about accepting outside help.
