Wales Activities:
Carers and Employment- Cath Bowen
During 2008 contact was made with over 100 employers to raise awareness of the issues faced by those in the workforce who juggle work and caring responsibilities.
Employers including DVLA, CORUS and members of the Carmarthenshire Chamber of Commerce.
Carers are often experienced and highly skilled but lack appropriate alternative care services to enable them to remain in employment.
Joint Policy and Assembly Post- Martyn Pengilley
This is a joint post between Crossroads Care Association and Princess Royal Trust for Carers in Wales.
This post ensures a source of expertise on policy and strategic development for carer issues and service delivery across both networks.
Innovations in Dementia Care- Fiona Guthrie, Crossroads Care in theVale EMI
Crossroads Care is working with Roger Rowett & Associates, who have been commissioned by the Care Council for Wales to find ways of improving the knowledge and understanding of the workforce (paid employees) in relation to dementia and eventually inform the Dementia Strategy for Wales.
"Life Journey Album". Although there are a few similar initiatives around, Crossroads Care is trialing an extremely simple idea that enables the main carer to build an album depicting the life journey that's been undertaken by the person with dementia. The anticipated benefits are as follows;
1. the carer can create the album at their own pace (no pressure to complete pre-printed questionnaires) and perhaps use the exercise to remember the more positive aspects of the person for whom they care and their shared experiences
2. enable the person with dementia to remember previous times in their lives and share those memories with others around them; spouse, grandchildren, neighbours, care workers, NHS staff, residential staff etc
3. in turn, others who care for the individual with dementia can understand that the person before them is more than just a confused elderly individual and that their life has been interesting, worthwhile and memorable.
